Over the years, many scientific studios have linked aluminum to serious neurotoxic effects. We still use aluminum foil on a daily basis for cooking, even if it was linked to dementia and Parkinson’s. Unfortunately, due to the lack of deeper studies, industries continue using aluminum at will.
Due to the studies linking aluminum with dangerous conditions, one can’t beg but ask – is aluminum foil safe to use in cooking?
What Does Science Say?
One of the most-linked studies online that links aluminum to dementia and Parkinson’s was conducted by the Keele University in the UK. It found high amounts of aluminum in the blood of a person diagnosed with Parkinson’s. The man worked with aluminum his whole life, and developed the condition at the age of 66. High levels of aluminum have been detected in the blood of Alzheimer’s patients in other studies too.
The most notable case is of a UK woman who died of Alzheimer’s in 2004 after it was discovered that 20 metric tons of aluminum were dumped into local drinking water years before. It seems that aluminum is not safe for our health at all, yet aluminum foil is constantly produced and sold in markets.
People working in welding, mining, metal factories, and agriculture are most exposed to the dangers of aluminum. Smokers ingest aluminum vapors too. It can enter our lungs and create residues that are directly absorbed in our bloodstreams. Safe levels of aluminum are found in water and soil, but we get much more of it due to the use of aluminum foil. Aluminum is everywhere around us, and it’s kind of tough to avoid.
People who live close to industrial areas are at a high risk of aluminum poisoning too. The CDC says that the safe levels are 7-9 mg. daily from food, air, and water. A small part of around 1 mg. of aluminum is ingested in our bodies, while the rest is discarded through the digestive tract. However, considering the number of people suffering from digestive problems, most of the aluminum we ingest stays within our bodies.

- Water bottles
- Cans and tins
- Shampoo, deodorants, lotions
As you can see, it’s pretty hard to avoid it. Aluminum is just as harmful to our central nervous system as a cigarette. Toxic metals such as it can cause degenerative ailments over time and injure the brain tissues. Our bodies can’t process it easily, and it can pass the brain-blood barrier easily. This is why it’s best to avoid using aluminum foil altogether. It’s simply too dangerous to use, and we can certainly live without it.
