What Causes Stinky Feet?
Hey, don’t be embarrassed about your stinky feet – we’ve all been there. Whether it’s your spouse, a coworker or a friend, stinky feet don’t discriminate. This problem affects everyone and is quite unpleasant even if not a cause for medical concern.
Known as eccrine bromhidrosis in medicine, it affects people of all ages and doesn’t discriminate by gender. The elderly, pregnant, and people with diabetes, though, are more likely to experience it.
With over half a million sweat glands in the feet, there’s a lot of sweat going on. Wearing socks and shoes traps it inside, resulting in a breeding ground for fungi and bacteria. Such a warm and moist environment is an ‘invitation’ for bacteria to multiply and thus cause the problem known as stinky feet.
Although it’s not an immediate cause for concern, it’s quite an unpleasant problem. Removing the stink isn’t as simple as changing your socks. You’ll need to wash your feet as well in order to eliminate it. That will only last until tomorrow, so people are always looking for a better solution.
How Do I Tackle Foot Odor?
The good news is that stinky feet can be resolved in a variety of ways. First and foremost, your hygiene must be at a high level in order to prevent it. If that’s not the root of the problem, you might be looking at hyper-sweating. A common problem for many people, this should be closely examined by a doctor in order to eliminate the cause.
If not caused by a medical condition, stinky feet can be resolved by antibacterial soap and proper washing technique. Splashing water on your feet isn’t going to cut it – you’ll need to work the nooks and crannies (read: go hard between the fingers) a few times per day in order to get rid of the stink. Many of us wash our feet wrong and it’s nothing wrong to admit. Wash them right, and the chances of stinky feet will drop down.
Foot anti-perspirants have also worked wonders for some people. Of course, there’s the potential of slipping and injuring yourself, so it’s not ideal. Plus, it’s not the most hygienic habit if you need to do it several times per day.
The good news is that there are several simple homemade remedies that can help. In this case, we’re talking about simple soaks and baths.
